British Values
Promoting British Values in School: Improving the Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development of Pupils.
In relation to DfES Guidance 27th November 2014
We promote British Values through our PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) and RE (Religious Education) curricula which embody the ethos of Acorns School and support the development of the ‘whole Child’.
Our Strategy for Embedding these Values:
Democracy
Acorns school has an established School Council which meets regularly. Class mates vote each member onto the Council at the beginning of the school year. We meet regularly to discuss matters raised in class. They are regularly asked to make ‘in-house decisions’ regarding team treats, lunchtime choices, money raising activities and much more.
Acorns has rolled out a ‘Playground buddy’ system where class groups elected a class buddy and council members presented their high visibility jackets and display photographs.
Rule of Law
The importance of laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school or the country are consistently reinforced at Acorns School. We teach the value behind laws by the boundaries we set for behaviour. In September each class produces a set of ’class rules’ with contributions from the pupils themselves. They make an agreement and display these clearly in the classroom. They are encouraged to refer to these throughout the year. Informal visits to/from people who help us like the police/ fire service help to reinforce this message.
Individual Liberty
Within Acorns School our children are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for our pupils to make choices safely empowered through E-safety and PSHE lessons. Pupils are given the freedom to make choices; whether this may be a choice of learning challenge or participation in a particular club.
Mutual Respect
Acorns is a culturally diverse school and all members of the school community treat others with respect. Whole School Assemblies, World Awareness Days, Festivals calendar celebrations, display boards featuring multi lingual greetings, common phrases and keywords. Community visits are regularly planned to address cultural diversity as are Religious Education and PHSE lessons. Acorns utilise the skills of their staff force through encouraging staff to deliver talks using their personal knowledge and first-hand experience. Members of the community are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning throughout the school. Community visits include places of worship that are important to different faiths. Our pupils are part of a culturally diverse society.
